1. THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE, AN HISTORICAL BUILDING

The beating heart of medicine in the city

Montpellier owes its fame as the cradle of medical instruction to its school, the faculty of medicine in the Western world to be continuously in operation since its beginnings.

The guide will take you on a tour of the building, that served in turn as a Benedictine monastery founded in the 14th century, a bishop’s palace and then a school of health and the new Delmas-Orfila-Rouvière Room which houses an unusual anatomical collection from Dr Spitzner’s old sideshow museum.

Access to the anatomy conservatory is not included due to restoration work.

2. Landmarks in the history of medicine

Eight centuries practising medicine

ViAs a city of tolerance and a cultural melting pot, Montpellier has always hosted students and doctors from around the world.
With this tour, set off on a journey through the medical history of the city, from the requisite Faculty of Medicine which was attended by Rabelais, Rondelet and Nostradamus, to the Saint-Côme amphitheatre, dedicated to surgical instruction.

Along the way, you will also enter the doors to the Pharmacie de la Miséricorde, a former apothecary which still houses a rich collection of earthenware pieces.

3. SAINT-CHARLES: FROM HOSPITAL TO CLINICS

A comprehensive overview of 8 centuries of of medicine

The Saint-Charles Hospital, now the Maison des Chœurs and a luxury residence, is one of the major facilities that have contributed to Montpellier’s reputation in terms of medicine.

This general hospital has seen many great names pass through its doors. Equipped with a chapel and created by the will of Louis XIV, it was also a place of confinement for the poor and vagrants, before becoming the great place of care that many Montpellier residents have known.

The creation of a new generation of clinics in the 1930s contributed to its modernisation and the creation of a unique architectural ensemble in the Languedoc region, which the guide invites you to discover during a tour that retraces the history of the place.

4. THE LAW COURTS

Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès, the creator of the Civil Code

Since its recent restoration, Montpellier’s Palais de Justice (Law Courts) has impressed passers-by even more. Its Corinthian columns, sculpted pediment and high steps give it the air of a temple, commanding respect and authority.

This tour will take you on a journey of discovery of this monument built in the 19th century.
Learn about its history and current affairs in the various courtrooms, and discover the work of Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès, the Montpellier-born creator of the Civil Code.

6. MONTPELLIER LAW FACULTY

In the footsteps of the great hours of Montpellier University

In the twelfth century, Montpellier began teaching law in the same way as medicine.

Over the centuries, great names of students and professors have frequented this law faculty: Placentin, Jean Moulin, Auguste Comte, Charles Gide, Georges Frêche and the author Paul Valéry.

In 1956, it moved into part of the former 17th-century convent of the Visitandines.
A place rich in symbols and exceptional spaces such as the Salle des Actes, the visit will include a diversion to the neighbouring rectorate to discover a painting depicting the great hours of Montpellier’s university.
