Mitridate, re di Ponto KV 87/74a [Mithridate, King of Pontus] is an opera seria in three acts. Libretto by Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi, based on Giuseppe Parini?s Italian translation of Jean Racine?s play.
Mozart was just 14 when Milan?s Teatro Regio Ducale commissioned him to write a grand opera seria, Mitridate, re di Ponto, whose libretto by Jean Racine was already enjoying a great reputation throughout Europe. It tells the story of a king and warlord after his army is defeated by the Roman general Pompey in 66 BC. His two sons, Sifare and Farnace, are in love with the Greek princess Aspasia, who also happens to be their father's fiancée. While the former proves loyal, the latter betrays them by choosing the Roman side... all ingredients for music that unleashes deep passions and emotions. At the end of 1770, Mozart was already demonstrating a musical caliber that foreshadowed his future great operatic works: a triumph that Philippe Jaroussky and Emmanuelle Bastet excel in recreating.
