The source of the river Hérault is in Mount Aigoual (1565m). Its route winds along gorges and across rocks of granite, schist, limestone and dolomite then hurtles through blocks of granite in torrents, carving out deep gorges scattered with waterfall pools and other cascades. The Pont du Diable (devil’s bridge) at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, built by Benedictine monks in the 10th century, marks the end of the gorges and the beginning of the river Hérault’s lower valley.
