This festival was created in July 1981 under the impulse of Dominique Bagouet who had just taken over the direction of the National Choreographic Centre of Montpellier, created within the framework of a policy of decentralisation of culture and regionalisation with the important support of the city of Montpellier and its mayor Georges Frêche.
