A meeting at the Top

Have an unforgettable experience: feast your eyes on the city from the top of the Arc de Triomphe and feast your senses on local wine

Unobstructed views of the city, sea and hinterland!

MONTPELLIER AND WINE A POTTED HISTORY

Today we’re taking you on a sensory and cultural experience with Tourist Information to visit a unique site only they have access to!

We head out to our meeting point under Montpellier’s Arc de Triomphe. Along the way we soak up the buzzing (and sun-drenched) atmosphere on Place de la Comédie, the beating heart of the city.

We use our time to gaze at the Haussmann-style buildings and spot a kind of “diving helmet”.

Anecdote

Can you see the building nicknamed the “diving helmet”?

If you look carefully, you can see two bas-reliefs on either side of the stone balcony. One depicts a wine press and the other is a train chimney, symbolising the railway line that travelled to the major wine trade port of Sète in the mid-19th century. The wine trade that brought prosperity to the city in recent centuries has had its history carved into stone.

A LIP-SMACKING TREAT AT THE TOP OF THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE

We’ve made it! Our guide greets us with a quick introduction before introducing us to the landmark’s secrets. After scaling 90 time-weathered steps, we’re finally at the top.

Waiting for us are Pic St Loup, Grés de Montpellier and AOC Languedoc winemakers with some sleek bottles of red, white and rosé wine.

They take turns offering us tastings with information about the terroirs and wineries. The wine around here is wonderfully diverse and takes our tastebuds on an adventure…

… red berry, candied fruit and spicy notes for reds, fresh vine peach and pear aromas for whites, there’s something for everyone.

Did you know ?

Occitanie is the biggest vine growing region in France.

The AOC Languedoc-Grès de Montpellier designation covers vineyards in and around Montpellier covering 12,000ha, 1000 of which are listed as AOC Languedoc – Grés de Montpellier.

The main grape varieties are grenache, mourvèdre and syrah.
